....has artwork displayed at the brand new Performing Arts Center!? We do!! Twenty eight art teachers were chosen (out of the 120+ in the district) to display student artwork for the opening celebration of this spectacular new building and we were one of them! I am so proud of my Ortega young artists and so honored that we were chosen to participate! The display will be up for the next several weeks, so please go check it out when you get a chance. You can find more information here:
http://www.fineartsaustin.org/ It sure is chilly around here! And we love it! Especially because it gives my 5th graders the perfect reason to create some haute hot chocolate mugs - time for some colorful glaze! ....local love bookstore, Book People, has partnered with the amazing creators of the new book Grandfather Gandhi and asked our Fine Arts Department to create several art lessons based on and inspired by this magical book. I, along with nine other chosen art teachers, now have our art lessons online and ready for the making! So, go forth, read this incredible book, and make some inspired art! http://www.grandfathergandhi.com/aisd/

Many many many thanks to Book People, authors Arun Gandhi and Bethany Hegedus, and illustrator Evan Turk for this wonderful opportunity and this oh so beautifully written and illustrated book!! Loooooving the cute and hilarious personality-filled faces of my 1st graders snowmen and snow women! Some wonderful Texas Book Festival authors and illustrators are visiting Ortega soon and we could not be more excited! Therefore, some wonderful 5th graders created some fantastic "Welcome!" cards for them!
It has been such a fantastic first several weeks of school in the Ortega Art Studio! My young artists are such creative art makers and inspire me every single day. Each grade level has been creating their sketchbooks and are now studying the art elements of line and shape. They are using their knowledge of line and shape to create collaborative art pieces inspired by some wonderful artists. Below are just a few examples of what they have been up to lately! The above works are 1st and 2nd grade collaborative paintings inspired by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. The finished product, inspired by French artist Henri Matisse, is coming soon! I'll be back next week with more amazing artwork updates so be sure to stop by! P.S. Artwork images from Kindergarten and 5th grade will also be posted next week! The above top two pieces are 3rd and 4th grade collaborative paintings inspired by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. And the above third piece is a result of said paintings all chopped up into geometric shapes and glued together! It is inspired by Columbian artist Olga de Amaral.
I am so excited about the 2014-2015 school year and cannot wait for our young artists to start creating their amazing artwork! I will be posting their new art projects as the school year progresses, but in the meantime here are a few of my favorite pieces they created from this past school year!
